A rape case from 13 years ago was solved using a corona mask - the police announced today (Thursday). This, following the arrest of a resident of the Jerusalem area at the beginning of the week, who is suspected of committing serious sexual offenses and beating a tourist who was in the country in 2009. The mask found was used as evidence in the rape case. The suspect's detention has been extended in court, and an indictment is expected against him today.

In early 2009, the police received a report that a woman (tourist) arrived at a hospital in Jerusalem with a bruise and allegedly committed a rape. Police investigators who arrived at the hospital questioned the complainant who said she was in Israel during a seminar, Which led her to a public park under the pretext of helping her carry the musical instruments she had. The suspect led her to a dark area, where he allegedly raped her violently, after hitting her on the head.

Immediately afterwards, the suspect fled the scene while the woman, who was in her twenties at the time of the act, was evacuated to the hospital for medical treatment. Following the incident, police opened an investigation in an attempt to trace the identity of the suspect in the act of rape and violence. Police investigators collected findings and evidence and carried out a variety of investigative actions, but the many investigative efforts invested at the time did not bear fruit.

Recently, there has been a significant development in the investigation of the case, among other things, thanks to the findings and evidence collected in the Corona mask used by the suspect, as well as technological advances in the field of forensic identification in the Israel Police. Investigators from the Jerusalem District revealed the identity of the suspect in the act of rape and began carrying out covert investigative actions.

In the first phase, the police investigators located the victim of the crime living abroad and updated it on this. Police investigators arrested the suspect in the act for questioning. On Monday this week, the suspect was brought in for an extended detention and the court extended his detention by seven days.

Following the completion of the investigation in the Jerusalem District of the police and after an evidentiary basis has been formulated against the suspect in the act, the Jerusalem District Attorney's Office is expected to file an indictment against the suspect today.

The Jerusalem District Commander, Superintendent Doron Turgeman, commented on the decipherment of the case and said: "The decipherment of the case and the arrest of the suspect were made possible thanks to the perseverance of ILP Zion investigators in the Jerusalem District, the use of advanced technological means and creative investigative actions.

In this case the victim of the crime is a tourist who visited Israel many years ago, was in fact a victim of a violent rape that led to her injury and also left a mental scar on her for life.

"This is further proof that even over time, we are working resolutely and sophistically to locate the criminals and prosecute them."
