More space for people instead of cars: That is the aim of the municipal project “See and the City”, in which citizens can take part.

The Bahnhofplatz should be more comfortable in summer, pedestrians and cyclists should have it easier.

There is also a program of events – and an artistic touch.

Starnberg - The Starnberg city council had already spoken out in favor of implementation in October 2020, but the tense corona situation ruined the start: But now the project with the idiosyncratic name "See and the City" is starting.

The goal: more quality of stay at the station square, more space for people instead of cars.

An online information event for citizens to help collect ideas is planned for Wednesday, January 26, from 7 p.m.

"From May to October, the area between Bahnhofstrasse/Bahnhofplatz junction and the roundabout on Kaiser-Wilhelm-Strasse is to receive a significant upgrade," says a press release from the city. The station square in the center is an important link between the city center and the lake promenade. At present, however, the square is neither visually appealing nor comfortable for pedestrians and cyclists. The city administration is aware that they are "at a disadvantage" - "because the area is primarily designed for the needs of motorists". They want to create a "city promenade". To this end, the area is to be designed to be traffic-calmed, sidewalks to be widened and parking spaces to be reduced. Other projects: Green spaces and seating areas that invite you to linger. The restaurateurs in the area should be allowed to set up sidewalk cafés like those in Vienna and Munich. And: "In order to visualize the advantages of the newly created open spaces, an artistic and colored design of the floor is planned," says the statement.

The Starnberg Bahnhofplatz should invite people to linger thanks to seating and less street space.

Mayor Patrick Janik recently said in an interview with Starnberger Merkur about the plans in the center: "My dream is a three-month street festival.

We want to celebrate together at Bahnhofplatz and show a traffic concept in which pedestrians and cyclists have equal rights with motorized traffic.

Just a couple of chairs on the street or a couple of flower pots aren't enough.” Keyword street festival: apart from the external upgrading, a varied program of cultural events is planned between May and October.

Above all, the city hopes that "See and the City" will provide new food for thought and impetus for the future, sustainable development of the area around the train station and the city centre.

As mentioned, there will be an initial exchange of ideas with the citizens on Wednesday, January 26, 7 p.m. - due to the corona in the online format as a video conference via "Zoom".

The city writes about the process: “After general information about the project, we start working out and concretizing design ideas.

Participants need a computer or tablet with internet access.

It is not necessary to register for the event in advance.”
