Report: Hamas officials' grant dropped to $ 3 million | Israel today

2022-01-20T13:02:17.226Z

Hamas received this by surprise after only two months ago it was agreed to increase the budget to $ 10 million • This is the third part of the monthly Qatari aid of $ 30 million • The Qatari envoy is expected to discuss during his current visit to the Gaza Strip

A knowledgeable source told the Palestinian newspaper Al-Ayyam yesterday (Wednesday) that Qatari envoy Muhammad al-Amadi had informed Hamas officials earlier this month that he had reduced the amount of the financial grant allocated to officials of the terrorist organization in the Gaza Strip from $ 10 million to only $ 3 million.

In light of the emissary's visit to the Gaza Strip this week, the source explained that the Qatari decision surprised senior Hamas officials, as less than two months ago the relevant parties reached a new agreement, under which a larger grant would be allocated in favor of officials' salaries.

This is the third part of Qatar's monthly assistance of $ 30 million, which includes about $ 10 million for about 100,000 families, and $ 10 million for the purchase of fuel to operate the power plant.

Yesterday, the payment of the monthly grant to 97,000 families began again.

The source explained that the decision could complicate the situation of the officials, that increasing the grant led to an increase in the percentage of salary paid to them.

The source said that the Qatari envoy is expected to discuss this issue with senior Hamas figures during his current visit to the Gaza Strip.

At the same time, the source noted that senior Gaza officials estimate that al-Amadi will provide positive answers to some of the other issues on the agenda.

Among the issues: Israel's agreement to issue at least 10,000 entry permits for workers from Gaza, other facilities at the crossings and restoration work on the ruins from Operation Wall Guard.

In addition, Gaza estimates that the Qatari envoy will give a positive answer regarding the extension of the Qatari grant until at least the end of the current year.

The source explained that the Qataris noted that the reduction of the grant to officials came in the context of a reorganization of the distribution of the Qatari grant.

For its part, the source warned of the negative consequences of the move.

About two months ago, Qatar agreed to purchase fuel and other materials from Egypt in the amount of ten million dollars, which would reach the Gaza Strip.

According to the understandings, Hamas was supposed to market the fuel in the Gaza market and thus pay the salaries of the officials.

This is in light of Israel's opposition to bringing in cash through the Erez crossing, as was the case in previous years.
