The Russian Defense Ministry announced that its forces are conducting joint naval exercises with their Chinese and Iranian counterparts in the waters of the Gulf of Oman from January 18 to 22.
"The Russian side represented in the exercises a group of ships of the Pacific Fleet, including the missile cruiser Varyag, the large anti-submarine ship Admiral Tributes and the large naval tanker Boris Potoma," the ministry said in a statement issued today.
The statement indicated that the military exercises include firing artillery systems to hit naval targets, joint tactical maneuvers, and search and enforcement operations at sea, in addition to training on inspections and liberation of ships seized by pirates.
As a result, the aforementioned group of Russian ships continues to cross into the waters of the Mediterranean, where they are participating alongside the forces of the Northern Fleet and the Baltic Fleet in joint maneuvers of the Russian naval forces, according to what the ministry said earlier today.
