The Garching campus of the Technical University of Munich (TUM) is getting an expensive addition.

The available building of the physics department for 1400 students is in the shell.

Garching

– On the Garching campus of the Technical University of Munich (TUM), a new lighthouse project is being built in the Bavarian university landscape: the available building for the physics department. 400 scientists and 1400 students will move in there.

The building, which is still under construction, is the start of a multi-part refurbishment measure for interdisciplinary research and teaching under the roof of the future "TUM School of Natural Sciences". "We are thus strengthening the international visibility and attractiveness of Munich physics and Bavaria as a location for science," emphasized Science Minister Bernd Sibler (CSU). "The achievements of the Physics Department are essential for the excellence status of the TUM and this also requires excellent framework conditions." The 78 million euro building, on which the transformer station originally stood, will strengthen the identity of the campus, Sibler is sure.

The floors are placed in a ring around the open courtyard, the laboratories are on the outer facades.

There are also open meeting places with social, seminar and meeting rooms.

Nothing was left to chance in the structural design. Special thermal simulations were carried out for the technical requirements and required room conditions in the laboratories with their special temperature specifications.

Due to the proximity to the Isar, the basement was secured against water by a special company.
