A 56-year-old man has died on Wednesday night in the waters of the port of Ibiza after the fishing boat he was skippering sank, after hitting some rocks when maneuvering to leave the port. The boat, named
Charpat Segundo
, ended up submerging in the insular bay shortly before eight in the afternoon. The other three crew members who were on board the boat at the time of the accident were unharmed. The accident occurred when the ship was about to leave the port of Vila, very close to the Botafoch dock, bound for Vinaròs (Castellón), where it was scheduled to undergo a hull cleaning to be ready for the start of the season.
As explained by Salvamento Marítimo de Baleares, the ship collided with the rocks of the port in one of the exit maneuvers. The crew managed to give notice of the crash through the emergency channel and Salvamento Marítimo immediately mobilized the
Salvamar Acrux
vessel and gave notice to the
Formentera Jet ferry,
which was in the area.
It was the passenger ferry that, with the help of an emergency boat, managed to rescue three of the ship's crew unharmed from the sea, which finally sank. A fourth man, the captain and fatal victim of the event, was also pulled from the sea in cardiorespiratory arrest. The toilets of the two ambulances of the 061 emergency service displaced to the area practiced resuscitation techniques for more than 45 minutes, but could not do anything to save his life. The deceased was a native of the island of Ibiza with a long history in the world of fishing. The Civil Guard has opened an investigation to clarify the causes of the crash and the circumstances in which it occurred, since the boat sank completely in just a few minutes.
The accident is added to that of last August 28, when the ferry
San Gwann
of the shipping company FRS ran aground on the northern islet of Es Malvins, shortly after leaving the port of Ibiza bound for Formentera.
35 passengers and 12 crew members were traveling on the ship and, as a result of the impact, more than twenty of them were injured.
A 10-year-old boy had to be transferred by helicopter to the pediatric ICU of the Son Espases hospital in Palma.
