The Tzohar organization council published this morning (Thursday) for the first time its position regarding the conversion reform of the Minister of Religions, Matan Kahana.
At the end of a discussion yesterday, the council unanimously decided to support the conversion outline, saying that "conversion by city rabbis is a significant opening to the Jewish identity of the state according to halakhah."
In the decision, they also wrote that "the council calls on the Minister of Religions to ensure the judicial independence of the conversion judges as a necessary condition for the success of the outline."
Rabbi David Satyu, chairman of the Tzohar organization, also issued a first statement on the issue and clarified, as expected, that he supports the outline.
It does not make sense for the rabbinical conversion courts to act as officials and not enjoy judicial independence as in the field of divorce and marriage. "
The publication comes a few hours after Chief Rabbi David Lau sharply attacked the outline in an interview with Israel Today, which will be published in full tomorrow (Friday) in the Shabbat supplement.
"With all due respect, even if the Knesset determines that a person with a fever of 43 degrees is healthy - it is not true, and even if a law is enacted that does not need cement to erect a building, it will not happen," the chief rabbi said.
"The same is true of conversion: the Knesset is not the one that will decide who a Jew is. A Jew is a person who accepts the yoke of mitzvos and joins the Jewish people."
