Valley is participating, and four communities are now participating in the MVG-Rad project.

The stations with the rental bikes are to be set up this year.

The communities involved believe in a future model.

Valley

– The Munich Transport Company (MVG) has given the go-ahead for the rental bike system in Valley.

City councilors voted unanimously in favor of the project at Tuesday night's meeting.

The decision also turns the traffic light to green in Weyarn.

As reported, the municipal council there gave its general approval for participation last week, but only on the condition that Valley is also involved.

There is a reason why Weyarn is making the realization of the project dependent on Valley. Weyarn's Mayor Leonhard Wöhr (CSU) is certain that Darchinger Bahnhof will be one of the main points of departure or destination. Therefore, the rental bike system for the monastery community only makes sense if the users find a bike station at the Darching train station. The project is scheduled to be completed this year. In addition to Valley and Weyarn, Holzkirchen and Otterfing will also introduce the MVG rental bike system. It is already known from Holzkirchen that the market town is happy about the involvement of the neighbors. The denser the network of bike stations, the more attractive it becomes for users and the more rental income is possible.

After the topic had already been discussed in the Valley municipal council in May of last year - at that time with some critical voices - this time it met with broad support. Mayor Bernhard Schäfer (FWG) opened the debate with the prognosis: “Mobility will become the buzzword of the future. Even if the rental bike system has to be pushed at first, I am convinced that it will work.”

He also suggested that the district could be more active in terms of financing in the future.

For the new project in the district, the district council approved a subsidy of 40,000 euros for the investment, but rejected a share in the operating costs.

The reason: rental bikes are not included in the district's local transport plan.

The district treasurer therefore has to take grants for this from the budget pot for voluntary services, and he no longer gives them.

The local transport plan for the district will be updated over the next two to three years, explained Mayor Schäfer.

Rental bikes could then be included, and then "it would no longer be a voluntary task for the district".

Schäfer is also certain that the number of supporters of the rental bike system will increase once it has been introduced in the first communities: "Supply creates demand." This was also the view of Christoph Trömer (FWG), who considered the project absolutely worthy of support.

"We should invest," he said.

Experience must show how the rental bikes are accepted.

Angelika Falkenhahn (SPD) described the rental bike system as a component of the energy transition.

“And we have to start somewhere with the energy transition.” With the introduction of the MVG bike, her parliamentary colleague Johannes Schneider harbored the hope that more bike paths would be built in the future.

Two locations, each with five wheels, will be set up in Valley: one at Darching train station and one in the Oberlaindern industrial park.

The municipality has to pay operating costs of 5,000 euros per station per year, which includes, among other things, the maintenance of the bikes.

A part comes in through the rental income.

The municipalities are contractually bound for five years.

Getting off is not possible, regardless of whether the rental bikes are well received or find few users.
