The International Criminal Court (CPI) extended for 3 months, until April 16, the deadline for the government of the questioned president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, to present its report on alleged crimes against humanity committed in the country.

In a document, dated January 17 and signed by the ICC prosecutor, Karim Kahn, it is indicated that "in the spirit of cooperation, dialogue and fairness, the prosecutor also agreed to grant Venezuela an extension of 3 months" for " inform the Court of its investigation within the meaning of Article 18(2)”.

The text indicates that the extension is “appropriate and justified”.

The extension follows a request from the Maduro government to Kahn on January 3, which was answered on January 13.

The original deadline was January 16.

"This extension is also justified to give enough time, according to the established schedules, for the prosecutor to travel to Venezuela before the expiration of the term" to "engage in a meaningful dialogue with the Venezuelan government," he said.

On November 3, the Venezuelan government and the ICC signed a memorandum of understanding by which the South American country promised to cooperate with the investigation that the Court will carry out there for allegations of crimes against humanity.

At the time, Maduro said "we respect his decision as a State, although we have told him that we do not share it, and in that framework we have signed an agreement that now guarantees cooperation effectively."

The investigation, according to the memorandum, is "intended to determine the truth and whether or not there are grounds to bring charges against any person."

The Maduro government has been under preliminary examination at the ICC since February 2018 for alleged crimes against humanity to determine whether it warranted a trial.

In December 2020, the court's prosecutor's office said it had found reasonable grounds to believe that crimes against humanity had been committed in Venezuela since at least April 2017.
