There is quite a lot to do this year in and around the house for children in Wartenberg.

Children's eyes light up when large vehicles roll up and craftsmen bustle about.

In this respect, the girls and booths in the Wartenberger house for children are definitely not boring these days.

Because recently the major renovation, which is sorely needed.

So necessary that the market town is budgeting 2.1 million euros for this year, although the financial situation is known to be quite tense.

Wartenberg – One of the reasons for waiting is the dilapidated roof, as Mayor Christian Pröbst emphasized several times last year.

When asked by our newspaper, he informed us that the interior renovation had started, punctually on the planned date of January 10th.

"The painters even worked during the Christmas holidays," reports Pröbst.

According to him, the clearing out of group rooms, for example, was started last week, and electrical equipment that interfered with the work was dismantled.

"And the drywall builder has been doing the vapor barrier and acoustic ceiling since this Monday," says Pröbst.

From next Monday, the painters could then become active in the first group rooms, "after that comes the parquet grinder".

The house for children accommodates eight groups – five in kindergarten and three in crèche. As Pröbst explains, two group rooms are always renovated at the same time. This takes about four weeks each time. "The first two groups moved before Christmas," reports director Sylvia Kebesch. In this case, moving means moving while the premises are being brought back into shape. Alternative locations are the former dining room and the conference room. "Of course it's a bit cramped there. But the children have set themselves up very nicely and very comfortably. You find all of this very exciting. On the one hand their new rooms, on the other hand there is always something happening. Recently, for example, came the containers in which other pieces of furniture are temporarily stored. And of course there are many vehicles to see,” says Kebesch about the entertaining times for her protégés.

There is quite a lot to see for the children at the facility.

There are also containers outside.

The roofer will be active from March, and the sun protection will also be improved.

She has been in charge of the children's home since September 1995, almost the entire time it has existed.

Accordingly, she has witnessed how the ravages of time have gnawed at the facility.

"Of course some things are getting old," she says.

So it's nice to see the first progress in the staff wing and basement - including a bedroom.

"It's all much fresher now," says Kebesch happily.

The children's home is a patient with many infirmities.

On the one hand, the leaking roof was temporarily covered with a tarpaulin.

The old tin roof comes out, first a bitumen cover is put in, then a new tin roof is attached.

The roofer is expected to get down to work in March and will need three to four months for his work, says Pröbst.

Vapor barriers are also installed.

Such precautions prevent condensation from forming inside walls and ceilings, which can lead to moisture damage such as mold growth if not dried properly.

In addition, there are new acoustic ceilings made of plaster.

The group rooms are painted and the parquet floor is sanded.

"Inside and outside everything is deleted," says Pröbst.

The windows are also given a fresh coat of paint, and some are even completely replaced.

"They're pretty much broken where it rained," says the mayor.

Fire protection will also be upgraded, so a few doors will be replaced.

Since it heats up quite a bit inside in the summer, the sun protection outside is being redone.

A venetian blind should slow down the UV light, the glass panes of the dome are covered with a reflector foil.

The shading is renewed on the south side.

But that's not all: a little house is being built to store prams.

"They were in the corridor to date," says Pröbst, which means that WiFi will also be installed soon.

"And at the end of the year the permanently installed air cleaners will come," he announces.

The community should stay within budget: "We should get there," estimates Pröbst.

The renovation is expected to be completed this year.

"I'm almost certain that it will work," he says.

So the house would be nicely decked out for its milestone birthday: January 2023 will be the 30th anniversary of its opening.
