The production of electricity from renewable energy in the world has been steadily increasing in recent years.

At the end of 2019, about 33% of the electricity installed to generate electricity in the world was from renewable energy.

However, Israel lags far behind when in 2020 the rate of renewable energy in total electricity consumption was about 7% and 2020 targets were not even achieved, although the State of Israel has joined international processes to promote renewable energy, as part of its commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and experience. To create energy independence and energy security.

But the issue is not just about the state shuffling in the development of renewable energy, but worse than that - the planning institutions in the country are promoting with their eyes open new fossil power plants.

While the government decision of October 2020 set goals for the promotion of renewable energy over the construction of new polluting power plants, at the same time the National Infrastructure Committee (OTL) approves gas and diesel based power plants, which are environmental, health and safety damaging and a slap in the face to the right to join To the rest of the Western world, which has long understood that burning fossil fuels is leading to

an

increase in greenhouse gas concentrations, which is the main cause of climate change.

A company that generates electricity from renewable energies. The Siemens power plant is the oldest and latest in the polluting technology that no one in the world is willing to build.

This is a first and precedent-setting case in which the state privatizes the planning of national infrastructure by private entrepreneurs and sharpens the feeling that the economic interests of capitalists outweigh the public good. A moment after the state itself has set policies and goals on the subject of renewable energies it seems that it is captive to gas tycoons and therefore unable to move towards advancing those goals.

What are the solutions? What can we do to join the national effort to produce sufficient electricity, but one that is clean, environmentally friendly and innovative?

18 heads of local authorities from Sharon and Samaria, from all walks of Israeli society, Jews, Arabs, secular and ultra-Orthodox, from right and left, from urban and rural areas, undertake to work together to promote renewable energy in local authorities to help advance national green energy production goals. These authorities have started and will continue to build solar roofs on all public buildings.

Moreover, we will offer open spaces in our authorities' areas for huge facilities for solar energy - NIMBY does not reflect the approach of the heads of the authorities who are willing to take up the issue and not allow its treatment to others.

A country that wanted to stop promoting polluting gas should promote solar stations, even if they are huge in size from what we know - this is a price to pay for the benefit of public health and the preservation of the environment.

Regulation in favor of solar energy should be released and local authorities should be given the tools and budgets to set up more and more solar panels, promote storage stations that will enable energy independence, persist in these alternatives and commit to energy reset. Despite the complexity of this, the solar market needs to gain momentum in Israel as well. In the meantime, the existing gas stations will provide a safety net until the end of the transition process, depending on the position of the Minister of Energy and Infrastructure.

33 ministers voted in Government Resolution 465 to promote renewable energy in the electricity sector and pledged to thicken the existing array in proximity or within existing infrastructure facilities and not through the construction of new power plants in new areas.

Now is the time for our elected officials to implement the decisions they themselves have made and not give in to the construction of polluting power plants in the hearts of half a million people, new stations that once they start investing huge capital will be the most outdated in the world in terms of technology.

The decisions that will be made now, will affect us and our environment for decades to come.

The current reality and global climate crisis, as well as the available green technologies, require us to recalculate a trajectory and move to renewable energies, for us and for future generations.
