Who is sitting behind the wheel? | Israel today

The FBI initially stated that the abduction in the synagogue in Texas "was not related to the Jewish community" • This mistake, which was not accidental, indicates the involvement of "professionals" as policy makers and consciousness

Last Saturday, an armed Islamic terrorist broke into the Beit Yisrael synagogue in Culiwille, Texas, holding a rabbi and three other Jewish worshipers hostage.

Eleven hours later, after the hostages managed to escape and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) killed the terrorist, Matt de Sereno, commander of the scene on behalf of the FBI, approached reporters on the spot, announcing that the terrorist was not anti-Semitic and "unrelated to the Jewish community."

The complete disconnect between the words of the senior FBI officer and the incident he commanded in Culiwille caused a storm of criticism from American Jews.

Similar criticism was voiced in some U.S. media outlets. Following the reactions, and also as a result of President Joe Biden's remarks that he kindly called the incident a "terrorist attack" - though he could not say "why the terrorist used antisemitic and anti-Israel expressions" - the The FBI released its version a day later, at the end of the day the Federal Bureau of Investigation's spokesperson on a version that the incident in the synagogue was indeed an antisemitic terrorist attack.

There are people on a particular side of the political spectrum who would describe de Sereno's attempt to hide the Muslim terrorist's antisemitic motive as a "professional" failure.

De Sereno, they would argue, is a professional, not a politician.

And so, everything he does stems from professional rather than political considerations.

His failure must be corrected by strengthening his and his people's "professionalism."

But purely professionally, by all accounts de Sereno and his men acted well.

Fact is, the hostages came out unscathed and the terrorist was killed.

The false claim Sadeh Sereno made about the ideological-political nature of the attack on the Jews in the synagogue was not a professional error.

It was a political-ideological statement.

And it does not exist in a vacuum.

Terrorism, according to the Ministry of Justice

Over the past decade and a half, both the FBI and the U.S. Department of Justice have undergone a process of politicization and radicalization. This process led in 2013 to selective enforcement of tax laws against organizations with conservative-Republican views. It also led to illegal activity by US intelligence arms against the 2016 Donald Trump presidential campaign. Illegally and out of clear political interest, the FBI and Justice Department officials abused their authority "as professionals" to conduct a fact-based political investigation against Trump and his advisers. These investigations, which cost taxpayers tens of millions of dollars, sabotaged the former president and his administration's freedom of action for two and a half years, severely undermining public peace and U.S. domestic and foreign policy.

Hence the short way to address the terrorist attack in the synagogue.

For two years now, the FBI and the Department of Justice have been insisting for political reasons that the most significant and dangerous terrorist threat to the United States is not Islamic terrorism, or terrorism by violent leftist organizations such as ANTIFA and Black Lives Matter, which set fire to U.S. cities by 2020.

As FBI Director Christopher Ray and Attorney General Merrick Garland have made clear in their testimony before Congress over the past year, in terms of the justice system the greatest terrorist threat in America comes from supporters of former President Trump.

In line with this premise, law enforcement and the war on terror in the United States today invest most of their resources and energy in investigating Americans who participated in or supported the riots on Capitol Hill on January 6, 2021.

Changing the FBI's version of the nature of the attack in Culiwille is, of course, a positive thing.

But a real change in the treatment of the threat of anti-Semitism and Islamic terrorism will be examined only further down the road;

We will know this from the activities of the FBI and the Ministry of Justice in dealing with terrorist incidents and threats and violence coming from Islamic terrorists and their supporters.

De Sereno's deliberately misleading political statement clarified a simple truth that is usually hidden behind lofty words for "professionals" who supposedly serve the public in public service impartially, and against elected officials acting out of "political considerations" who are always inferior, rude and even corrupt.

The simple truth is that in ideological and political questions, civil servants, senior and professional as they may be, have no advantage over the rest of the public - including their elected representatives.

Do not account to anyone

To understand what this is all about, we will dump the civil servants in a democratic society into cars that are able to travel where the driver directs them.

Senior civil service officials are supposed to act as members of a car fleet maintenance team and take care of maintenance, spare parts, oil changes and filter cleaning.

The driver is supposed to be the public.

Whoever represents him is accountable.

These are elected officials.

The elected public does not need to know how a car works to know where it wants to go, and the role of senior civil servants is not to tell elected officials where to go, but only to provide them with the tools to get the car where they set it, as public messengers.

When appointed public servants themselves choose where to go and take the helm, they are not acting as professionals but as politicians.

Moreover, they act as politicians of the worst kind - those who do not hold the public accountable.

In other words, they act like tyrants.

If the situation is serious in America, in Israel it is much worse. Not only do we, as with them, have unelected lawyers in the State Attorney's Office and in the Office of the Attorney General determine moves according to their political positions regardless of professional considerations. In our case, in cooperation with Supreme Court justices who are not elected by the public or its elected officials, jurists determine foreign and security policy, taxation and energy policy, immigration policy, individual liberty limits, crime-fighting policy using selective and political enforcement, Health and more. They have acquired the authority to determine in advance which laws can be drafted and promoted, and in retrospect - which laws that have been lawfully enacted will be allowed to remain in the law book.

Here, the unelected officials, who are not accountable to anyone, also investigate, file indictments, prosecute, impose a non-punishment clause - "disgrace" - and send to jail elected people who nevertheless dare to sit in the driver's seat, grab the steering wheel and try to drive in the direction the public wants.

If the public wants the state to reflect and advance its desires and not get down on it or terrorize it, the first and necessary step it must take is to remove the unelected "professionals" from the driver's seat.
