The EEG surcharge costs an average German household around 150 euros a year.

The traffic light is now planning to bring forward the abolition of the surcharge because of the high energy prices.

Berlin - In view of the high energy prices, the traffic light coalition wants a quick abolition of the electricity price surcharge for renewable energies (EEG surcharge).

After the SPD, representatives of the Greens and FDP also spoke out in favor of an end to the levy this year.

"In view of the rising energy prices *, private households and companies urgently need a noticeable relief," said FDP Vice-Chairman Lukas Köhler.

Talks were underway in the traffic light coalition.

"I am confident that we will now quickly explore the limits of what is feasible and then, if necessary, quickly implement the necessary steps."

In the coalition agreement, the end of the EEG surcharge is not planned until 2023

Greens Deputy Group Leader Julia Verlinden told Reuters that the coalition had already done some things to relieve the pressure: "We are talking about further measures in the coalition.

A relief effect, affordability and sustainability are decisive criteria here.”

In the coalition agreement, the end of the levy is not planned until January 2023.

Only at the beginning of the year was it almost halved to just over 3.72 cents per kilowatt hour with the use of several billion euros in budget funds.

However, it still makes up more than ten percent of the electricity price.

The complete abolition would save an average household by around 150 euros over a year.

Energy prices: Traffic light promises help for poorer households

SPD parliamentary group leader Rolf Mützenich had already said before a meeting of his deputies on Thursday that he would explore a faster abolition of the levy.

In the draft resolution of the retreat, which is available to Reuters, additional aid is promised, especially for poorer households: "We will therefore keep a careful eye on the development of energy prices and intervene where necessary, especially with regard to low incomes," it says there.

"We will also review the existing regulations on the electricity market* in this regard." Electricity prices would be reduced because the EEG surcharge would be reduced to zero by 2023.

This wording leaves open the question of whether the surcharge will also be suspended earlier.
