To outsiders, it might just be a hobby.

For the Lachermeier family it is a family tradition in the fifth generation.

And it has now fallen victim to the flames.

Church Village

– “Just sad”: This is how Georg Lachermeier Sr. feels when he stands in front of the rubble of his beloved hobby on his leisure property on the FS 7 near Helfenbrunn. A fire last week, early Wednesday evening, caused total damage of between 40,000 and 45,000 euros. Seven colonies of bees fell victim to the flames, the beekeeper's hut with extensive accessories related to Lachermeier's passion - everything was destroyed. Including many memories such as pictures, lists of the queen bees of the past ten years and a knife that Georg Lachermeier received from a friend 50 years ago: "No insurance can replace that for me," says the 74-year-old. What happened there took him hard. He's been feeling really ill ever sincehas a stomach ache and just doesn't have any drive anymore, he says.

He doesn't believe that the fire broke out "just like that".

"How is that supposed to work?" he asks in frustration.

At the temperatures.

There was someone at work "who just has to be sick," suspects Lachermeier.

He also has evidence that it could have been arson.

Three months ago, a construction trailer that was used as a workers' shelter in the forest was burned down 300 meters as the crow flies.

Since the damage was limited and the hut was not insured, the incident was not reported by the owner at the time.

(By the way: everything from the region is now also available in our regular Freising newsletter.)

However, the damage that was done to the approximately one hectare property is immense.

"Not only the material, but above all the ideal," says Georg Lachermeier junior, who - like his father - is shocked by the fire.

Because there were also many beautiful childhood memories attached to the beekeeper's hut.

"This is where my grandfather taught me the basics of beekeeping when I was a little boy," he says.

And his grandfather inherited the bees from his father.

Now it is his children and nephews who are interested in beekeeping.

"A family passion in the fifth generation", as Lachermeier senior sums it up.

After the fire was extinguished, the extent became clear: the flames completely destroyed everything.

The popularity of their honey shows that what the Lachermeiers do is not "just a hobby".

Last year alone, the honey from Lachermeier's beehives was awarded three gold medals for its exquisite quality.

The beekeeper doesn't need to advertise it or sell it in shops.

“Word is getting around, some people come from Munich especially to get our honey.” This year you will have to put off a few customers, as the first thing to do is to rebuild and replace everything.

Three bee colonies on the property, which were a little apart, were spared the fire.

In addition, Georg Lachermeier jun.

there are always up to five colonies at home on his property - and there are also a few in the senior's garden in Zolling.

Nothing to save: the hut burned down completely.

What Georg Lachermeier Sr.

very touched is the sympathy of his beekeeping friends.

He is the 2nd chairman of the Freising Neustift beekeeping association, and word of the fire quickly got around.

"We were offered so much help, that's nice," he says, adding: "Beekeepers' hearts beat differently than the hearts of fishermen, for example.

Beekeepers help each other without hesitation.”

Incidentally, the hope that the perpetrator or perpetrators will be caught is high among the Lachermeiers.

On Monday, a woman reported seeing a suspicious vehicle drive away on the day of the fire.

The information was immediately passed on to the police.

They have no suspicions.

They're just sure it wasn't a "youth prank."

“Hopefully the police are successful.

First the site trailer, then the hut – to be honest, you're already wondering what's coming next.”
