The two former CDU federal party leaders Angela Merkel and Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer canceled Friedrich Merz for a dinner.
According to information from Union circles, Merz invited all living CDU chairmen to come together for a dinner in Berlin on Saturday evening, shortly after his election as party leader, which was considered safe.
It is said that the 66-year-old also wanted to use the proposal to send a signal of reconciliation with Merkel, with whom he has had an extremely difficult relationship for years.
While Wolfgang Schäuble and Armin Laschet agreed to the Sauerland, Merkel and Kramp-Karrenbauer Merz gave a basket.
From the office of the former chancellor, it was said that there were “reasons related to the deadline” for her cancellation, with Kramp-Karrenbauer, according to information from her environment, it was private matters.
The dinner now takes place without the two politicians.
Merz, who wants to drastically restructure the CDU leadership and is also counting on a number of women, has invited members of the old and new presidium to the dinner in addition to the chairmen.
The party is watching with interest whether Merz and Merkel will find better, more trusting contact with each other in their new roles.
The former Union parliamentary group leader recently admitted to SPIEGEL that she "completely underestimated" Merkel before she became chancellor.
"I would be happy if Angela Merkel and the CDU would stay together in the future, it will certainly not fail because of me," said Merz before Christmas.
