After a right-wing extremism scandal in the Bundestag police, the member of a right-wing fraternity was appointed as the new head of security in parliament.

This is reported by the "taz on the weekend".

Accordingly, the lawyer, who has headed the “Police and Security Tasks” department since December, is a member of a Berlin fraternity called “Gothia”.

As a functionary of the Old Men's Association, he is committed to the connection, which invited Holocaust deniers to speak and where there are personal overlaps with the right-wing extremist Identitarian Movement and the AfD.

In 1998, the leading civil servant ran for the federal elections for the right-wing populist party Bund Freier Bürger, which was organizing a rally against the Holocaust memorial at the time, writes the taz.

Bundestag administration does not want to prejudice

According to SPIEGEL information, the official was initially relieved of his post as head of department.

"With the consent of the official, he will not perform his duties until the facts have been clarified," said the press office of the Bundestag.

However, this is expressly not associated with any prejudice.

The information on the person provided in the questions had not previously been known to the Bundestag administration.

Bundestag President Bärbel Bas (SPD), who reports to the Bundestag police, did not want to comment on request.

The department head is not only the superior of the approximately 200 officers of the Bundestag police, he is also responsible for admission controls.

After the "taz" published right-wing extremist incidents at the Bundestag police in June 2021, the parliamentary administration questioned almost all active and former officials as part of internal investigations. As a result, according to information from the "taz", five disciplinary proceedings were initiated against Bundestag police officers. Two civil servants were suspended from duty, a former functionary of a Reich Citizens' Party and a police officer who is now being criminally investigated for allegedly showing the Hitler salute.

A particular focus of the survey was how the information about right-wing extremist incidents in the Bundestag police got to the "taz".

3 out of 15 questions in the questionnaire deal with this.

The officials are implicitly asked to report possible whistleblowers.

The press office emphasizes that an internal confidant has now been appointed for Bundestag employees.
