A Burmese military court sentenced a former MP from Aung San Suu Kyi's party to the death penalty on Friday, January 21, AFP learned from the authorities.

Phyo Zeyar Thaw, a member of the National League for Democracy, arrested in November, was "

", the junta said in a statement.
Many NLD MPs have been arrested or are on the run since the February 1, 2021 coup, but this is the first death sentence handed down to a former party MP.
