Covid-19: nearly 19,000 classes closed, a record

Since the deconfinement of May 2020, never have so many classes been closed because of Covid-19. Cases of contamination among teachers and students are also on the rise.


In a new update published this Friday, January 21, the Ministry of Education revealed that 18,786 classes are currently closed due to cases of Covid-19.

This represents 3.56% of all classes in France according to the ministry.

This is a new record since the reopening of schools in the spring of 2020. Last week, 14,380 classes were declared closed, despite a relaxed protocol.

In addition, the Ministry of Education indicated on Friday that 140 schools, 11 colleges and a high school were closed.

Only Reunion can claim to have no closed class, all the other academies are affected.

Authorities are also reporting an increase in Covid-19 cases among students and teachers.

Cumulatively over the past seven days, 463,197 students have tested positive.

Over the past 24 hours, more than 77,000 cases have been identified.

Among the educational staff, 30,774 have tested positive over the past seven days, or 2.56% of the total workforce.
