The city now wants to seize a special opportunity - and become a lighthouse project.

Freising

– Around the Freising train station and in the wider area there are urban deficiencies.

And that's why the entire quarter, which is around 25 hectares in size, is designated as a "central development area" in the urban development program (STEP 2030).

There is now a great opportunity for urban reorganization.

Your name: International Building Exhibition Munich Metropolitan Region (IBA).

(By the way: everything from the region is now also available in our regular Freising newsletter.)

The city's planning committee has decided to apply as an innovative measure for the IBA with a district development project around the station environment, which will run in a ten-year process up to 2032. One wants to become a lighthouse project of the IBA. Mayor Tobias Eschenbacher said on Wednesday that this could be "a really big hit". After ten years, "something can and should come out of it". The goals of the project are, for example, the implementation of an inner development to create residential and commercial space, the promotion of innovative mobility, the close integration with the natural area of the Isar floodplains, a climate-friendly neighborhood design with innovative forms of housing and open space development or new connections between the city center and Lerchenfeld. The extensive station environment with its special challenges offers the best conditions for developing an innovative project of the IBA as a role model, as stated in the report.

Get Deutsche Bahn on board

Important: Freising also has the chance to benefit from funding programs and support services related to the founding of an IBA company.

Such IBAs, which have existed in Germany for over 100 years, aim to develop exemplary solutions for current and future problems in architecture, urban and regional planning, and have become a "trademark of German planning culture", as it is said.

The IBA of the metropolitan region of Munich, for example, has given itself the title "Spaces of Mobility".

The city councilors unanimously followed the administration's recommendation to apply for the IBA with the station environment project.

Charlotte Reitsam (Greens), for example, found it "very welcome" to take part in the IBA.

The Lord Mayor found your suggestion to also include railway station 15 and the planned underpass at the level of the Schlüter area positive.

Nicolas Graßy (left) demanded that one should not strive for “nice prestige objects”, but rather ensure a development that allows rents in the lower and middle range.

Eschenbacher agreed to that as well.

And in the eyes of planning consultant Hans Hölzl (FSM), participation in the IBA finally offers the chance to also “bring Deutsche Bahn on board”.
