Moosen

– “If the secondary schools always demonstrate on Fridays, what could we do to protect the environment in the elementary school?” The Moosen students pursued this question, and the idea for “Fridays For Future at the Moosen Elementary School” came about.

The children presented their project to Taufkirchen's Mayor Stefan Haberl on Thursday.

"For a year, the children dealt weekly with questions on the topics of sustainability and environmental protection and realized various individual projects," explained teacher Verena Kainz.

It should be something action-oriented in which the children can work actively and constantly over a longer period of time.

The teacher was in charge of preparing something for this every week.

The students of their former class 3a visited classes 1 to 4 as "environmental detectives" and presented them with an environmental goal, for example "Build a hedgehog castle", "Try not to eat meat for a week" or "Explore the Vils and take a picture". .

They had a week to implement it.

If the goal was reached, the children got a stamp in their "environmental passport" and then the environmental detectives presented the new goal.

For a full environmental pass there was a bag of bee-friendly seeds.

There were also environmental goals for the whole school family, Kainz reported, for example "We collect all the plastic waste in our school for a week".

The teacher is happy to say that every Friday there were interesting conversations and discussions.

The project was also followed up in homeschooling and the goals were made available to the school family on a digital pinboard.

For this special commitment under the model of sustainable development, the school family was awarded two stars by the German Society for Environmental Education (DGU) in November 2021 as "Environmental School in Europe - International Sustainability School". According to Kainz, motivating the students for a year to deal with different focal points of environmental protection was primarily achieved through child-friendly hands-on activities and the involvement of everyone involved in the school family, including the parents. She is pleased that the monthly projects are now continuing, which are implemented individually in the classes.

Mayor Haberl congratulated on the award and asked the children what they particularly enjoyed.

"Build a bird feeder and a bird bath," Jacob answered.

"How to make seed bombs for the meadow," interjected Aaron.

"I was picking up trash at the playground with my third-grade friends Leon, Emma and Maxi," Oscar said.

And Veronika revealed that you should “always turn off the light when there is a break or when you go to sports to save electricity.

And at home you shouldn't watch too much TV and mum shouldn't play too much on the mobile phone."
