Germany trend: Union supporters place great trust in Merz – SPD loses on Sunday question

As the next party leader, Friedrich Merz should kiss the CDU awake again and make it fit for the future.

The Union voters are there with the best hope, as the Germany trend shows.

Munich/Berlin - Many CDU supporters apparently see light at the end of the tunnel.

They associate Friedrich Merz* with the hope of an upswing.

As the latest "Deutschlandtrend" by Infratest dimap on behalf of the ARD "Morgenmagazin" showed before the party conference on Saturday, 63 percent of the Union voters expect that the designated new federal chairman of the Christian Democrats will do a good job.

The Sauerland region is not judged quite so positively by the population as a whole.

Because of all 1424 voters surveyed from January 18th to 19th, only 37 percent agreed.

One in three even assumes that the former chairman of the parliamentary group of the CDU and CSU will not be a good party leader.

Germany trend: SPD and FDP lose in Sunday question - Union and AfD win slightly

In the Sunday question, the SPD slipped by one percentage point to 25 percent, but remained the strongest force.

The Union increases by one percentage point and comes to 24 percent.

The Greens remain at 16 percent, so the AfD* is approaching one percentage point and is now at twelve percent.

The FDP has lost slightly and has now reached ten percent.

The left * is still at five percent.

This would give the traffic light coalition a minimum majority of 51 percent.

The federal government could collect plus points in the corona pandemic.

The current measures to combat the crisis are welcomed by many people.

45 percent of those surveyed said they were appropriate given the contagious omicron* variant, and 27 percent didn't even go far enough.

Germany trend: Only one in four thinks the corona measures are too tough

Only a quarter of the survey participants stated that the corona measures would go too far.

A predominant rejection is shown only by the supporters of the AfD: 64 percent of them go the rules too far.

For comparison: In the survey two weeks earlier, when no explicit reference was made to Omikron, 42 percent of all participants found the measures appropriate and 31 percent would have liked greater cuts.

Even then, 25 percent thought the measures were too harsh.
