The former deputy of Gard, elected MEP under the colors of the RN in 2019, had been distant for months with the party of which he has been a fellow traveler since 2012. Dismissed from the investiture committee of the RN in the summer of 2020 , the chosen one had threatened to slam the door of the party. Before being overtaken by Marine Le Pen who had entrusted him with the management of its culture program.

In a video posted on his Facebook account, Gilbert Collard had left little doubt on Friday, at the end of the afternoon, as to the imminence of his rallying, declaring:

“Tomorrow, I am going to bathe in the river [.. .] Rubicon”.

A nod to the recent rallying of MEP RN Jérôme Rivière, president of the French delegation of the Identity and Democracy group in the European Parliament.
