Upheaval at the CDU state leadership in the northeast after losing state and federal elections: The new faction leader in the state parliament, Franz-Robert Liskow, is now also aiming for the state presidency in MV.
So far, veteran Eckhardt Rehberg has been acting as the party's acting leader.
Schwerin - The 34-year-old CDU faction leader in the Schwerin state parliament, Franz-Robert Liskow, wants to run for the state presidency of his party and rejuvenate the Union leadership in the north-east.
He announced his candidacy in a letter to the extended CDU state board on Thursday, a spokesman said.
The “Ostsee-Zeitung” reported first on Friday.
Liskow wrote to the approximately 30-strong committee that his candidacy should be understood as an offer to the party to significantly rejuvenate itself at the top and at the same time to ensure that the CDU MV remains as a political stability factor.
Since the lost state and federal elections four months ago, the CDU in the north-east has been in an “extremely difficult phase”.
Immediately after the election day, the state chairman and leading candidate for the state election, Michael Sack, resigned.
Since then, the CDU veteran Eckhardt Rehberg (68), until autumn 2021 budgetary spokesman for the Union faction in the Bundestag, has been leading on an interim basis, the largest party in the northeast with 4800 members.

The difficult phase in which the CDU MV finds itself will not end with the election of the state executive, Liskow predicted in his letter.
"The new election of the state executive is the start of setting up the party in terms of organization, content and personnel in such a way that we emerge as the strongest political force in the 2024 local elections." This requires constructive cooperation, a lot of diligence and a high level of professionalism at all levels.
The party conference with the election of a new state executive is planned for March 26 in Güstrow, according to the CDU state office.
Other interested parties for the presidency are not yet known.
Franz-Robert Liskow lives in Demmin (Mecklenburgische Seenplatte district).
After the state elections, he was elected the new parliamentary group leader after his predecessor, Wolfgang Waldmüller, had decided not to run again.
On September 26, 2021, the Union had its worst state election result in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania with 13.3 percent.
The colors of the state government then changed from red-black to red-red.
