Virologists are already puzzling over the right time for a fourth vaccination.

How long does the booster work?

And how many vaccinations will it need in the future?

Munich – Not even half of the population has gotten their third spade when virologists are already debating a fourth vaccination to tame the highly infectious Omicron virus variant.

About three months after the booster vaccination, the antibody protection decreases again, said the chairwoman of the Marburger Bund medical association, Susanne Johna, to the editorial network Germany.

What does this mean for people who already received their booster in October?

Especially people with immune deficiency were already boosted in autumn.

Do you need injection number four already?

There is still no recommendation from the Standing Vaccination Commission (Stiko) that risk groups should be vaccinated a fourth time in the foreseeable future. In the 17th update of the Covid 19 vaccination recommendation, Stiko advises a booster vaccination after a completed basic immunization - not after a booster. However, Federal Minister of Health Karl Lauterbach (SPD) recently warned that it is not known how long the booster protection at Omikron will last, writes the WDR.

More and more scientists in Germany are convinced of a fourth vaccination and are calling for a second booster.

Drosten, for example, already predicted a fourth vaccination adapted to Omicron from the second quarter of this year.

The virologist assumes that we will enter an endemic state next winter, i.e. that the corona virus, like influenza, will appear seasonally and only in certain groups of people.

Shortly before this state is reached, older and vulnerable people would have to have themselves boosted again.

Duration of vaccination protection

With some vaccinations, after a third vaccination, the protection lasts for several decades or even a lifetime.

According to the RKI, vaccinations against diphtheria and tetanus should be refreshed every ten years.

An influenza vaccination, on the other hand, generally only protects for six to 12 months and therefore has to be boosted every year.

Booster Protection: How Many Booster Shots Does It Take?

How many boosters will we need in the future? One every year? In the search for an answer, scientists are still groping in the dark. The data situation in this country is still poor. A look at Israel can help. There they have already started with a fourth vaccination, i.e. a second booster. As Susanne Johna told the editorial network Germany, the first studies from Israel would destroy the hope of a lasting effect after a fourth vaccination.

But that doesn't change the fact that the vaccinations protect against a severe course of Covid-19.

With the corona vaccination, the protection usually remains “relatively high for a relatively long time” at the latest after the third vaccination, says Sebastian Ulbert, vaccine researcher at the Fraunhofer Institute for Cell Therapy and Immunology.

Because the booster strengthens the immunological memory (the so-called T-cells) and can - despite falling antibodies - continue to protect against a severe course, according to the expert.

In the fight against the corona pandemic, vaccinations are and will remain our most important protective shield.
