Animals that end up in animal shelters in the first few weeks of the new year are often given away at Christmas.
Many facilities are overcrowded - fortunately the Geltinger animal shelter is not.
Gelting – First a cuddly gift, then an unloved appendage: Animals are often given away at Christmas, which then end up in the animal shelter in the first few weeks of the new year.
That is why many facilities in Germany are currently overcrowded.
The situation in the Josefa Burger animal shelter in Gelting is different.
"As in the last few years, everything is relaxed here with us," says manager Manuela Ravara.
Not a dog, cat, or guinea pig has been handed over here since the holidays.
"It may be because we live in the country," says Ravara.
"You also have to consider that Garmisch or Munich, for example, have a much larger catchment area than we do." In addition, the Josefa Burger animal shelter does not place any animals before Christmas and New Year's.
"Unless we already know the 'new family' in advance."
Ravara warns against online purchases
In this context, Ravara warns against buying an animal companion over the Internet.
"I'll say it quite frankly: the Internet is destroying animal shelters." And: "The proverbial pig in a poke is being bought here." give special features.
"No one will be happy if, for example, a dog is to be brought into a family with children, but the animal doesn't like children because of bad experiences." There is also the opportunity to get to know the future family member in advance.
"Especially with dogs through joint walks."
Ravara's latest addition is a found cat from the Robin Path in Geretsried.
"A cuddly little boy of about a year or two.
Here, however, we hope that its owner will contact us.”
