Since the war objects were found, there has been silence on the property at Grünen Wasserl, where a warehouse for chippings has stood since spring 2020, waiting to serve its purpose.

It remains exciting to see how and when things will continue there, also in terms of renaturation.

Kreuth – The construction of the warehouse on a 6900 square meter area on the Grüner Wasserl, referred to as "Grea Wasserl" by the valley's citizens, literally kicked up a lot of dust. The 23 by 14 meter building has been in place since spring 2020. It is intended to store grit. "Exclusively", as stated in the approval and based on the submitted facility description in the requirements of nature conservation, as district office spokeswoman Sophie Stadler explains.

But the hall has not yet fulfilled its purpose, because a curious find got in the way.

At the end of 2020, a war helmet and metal sleeves from the Second World War were found during excavation work for the first renaturation measures on the creek bank.

Elisabeth Dießl, owner of the area, and her father Georg Dießl were then requested to commission appropriate reports.

All work had to be suspended.

It cannot be ruled out that other objects could appear.

These soil protection reports are now available, as is a statement from the Rosenheim Water Management Office.

It states that no further contamination is expected.

According to Sophie Stadler, all documents confirm that there is nothing standing in the way of renaturation of the area - as planned.

The planned renaturation measure – along with the construction of the hall itself, that was also a controversial aspect. While the construction of the storage hall and the associated relocation of the access road to the gravel works at Ringsee were rejected in a first attempt in 2015 "because of the sensitive location of the building site in terms of ecology and landscape protection", it was approved in the second attempt - among other things with the reason that nature would even benefit there and the biotope would increase fivefold.

But when does this natural surge occur at the "Grea Wasserl"?

"Theoretically, the measures must be carried out six months after completion of the warehouse," says Stadler.

"Due to the required pollutant tests, however, this schedule could no longer be adhered to." The owner, assures Stadler, will be asked to carry out the renaturation very promptly.

This must take place in close coordination with the lower nature conservation authority.

Renaturation at the "Grea Wasserl" is a long time coming

Stadler summarizes what is at stake, namely mainly a removal of land in the bank area, "This means that the current storage area must be removed at defined points at the level of the Grüner Wasserl." The aim is to create a near-natural, very wet biotope situation with individual water areas and site-typical, native riparian vegetation.

Nature should reclaim the newly gained areas on its own in order to achieve the desired "untouched" biotope.

Banks and embankments may not be planted.

Stadler adds a "but": "The measures take place in the bank area, where it is known that fish will spawn and waterfowl will breed in spring." Close coordination and jointly defining a time window are all the more important.

Warehouse at the Grünen Wasserl: Court files closed

Georg Dießl, who cannot understand the fuss surrounding his storage area and even speaks of "common untruths", prefers not to comment at all when asked.

Not only did the reports cost a lot of money, says Dießl, but the removal of soil material to special disposal sites was also time-consuming.

At the end of January, he adds, there should be another meeting.

Then it should again be about the extent to which the biotope can be reached.

Dießl leaves open when the warehouse will start operations and thus fulfill its purpose.

Complaints from directly affected neighbors have now been completely shelved.

"All court files are closed," Dießl states with satisfaction, which plaintiff Jochen Pagenberg confirms.

“It can only be fine with me if operations continue to rest,” says Pagenberg.
