Regensburg does not ban demonstrations against corona measures.

City Hall sees no legal basis for legal intervention.

Regensburg – The question of whether public demonstrations against current corona measures should be banned is currently occupying the city of Regensburg*.

Mayor Gertrud Maltz-Schwarzfischer (SPD) would personally campaign for a ban on the protests, but there was no legal basis for this.

That's what she said on Thursday evening in the management committee of the city council.

After extensive discussions with the responsible police*, it was decided that legal intervention would not stand up.

With the help of drones, the police had kept an eye on the protest march and found that the minimum distance was maintained.

Regensburg: Ban on protests in extreme cases

This fact is difficult for Mayor Maltz-Schwarzfischer to accept.

However, her hands are tied in this case, as there are no extreme cases.

A lawsuit would probably not go through in the administrative court.

In view of an impending defeat in court, Maltz-Schwarzfischer sees no other option than to continue to allow the "walks".

According to

of the

Mittelbayerische Zeitung

, legal officer Dr.

Walther Boeckh that the city can only ban protests in extreme cases.

A comparison to the recently banned marches in Munich* cannot be drawn, since criminal offenses such as bodily harm or resistance to state authority were the order of the day in the state capital.

Regensburg: Discussion splits regional politics

The ongoing discussion about how to deal with the demonstrations is now also splitting Regensburg politics.

The Green City Councilor Theresa Eberlein asked why the “walkers” weren’t even required to wear a mask.

She also denounced the downplaying of the Holocaust by right-wing Protestants.

City councilor Christian Janele (CSB), on the other hand, said that there were "normal citizens" from all walks of life in the protest marches.

On Thursday, Maltz-Schwarzfischer commented on the subject again in a press release and made it clear that the “walkers” were definitely on the screen and that developments were being observed.

Although everyone has the right to freely express their opinion on vaccination and corona measures, as soon as the whole thing becomes radicalized, it becomes “worrying”.

For this reason, the hustle and bustle will be examined very carefully.

Regensburg: Request to position yourself against the right

In addition, the town hall calls on all "walkers" to take a clear stand against right-wing extremist and nationalist attitudes.

Registered meetings would be a helpful sign.

Because the aggressiveness at the unregistered meetings is increasing.

The Regensburg “Initiative against the Right” has been warning for a long time of an increased influx and an increasingly aggressive mood among the protesters.

Fisticuffs and insults are becoming more and more frequent.

Among other things, members of the neo-Nazi party "The Third Way" were recently part of the protest march.

When asked whether the city of Regensburg wants to react to the "anti-corona marches" with symbolic politics, there is a clear no.

While in Landshut* a sign of solidarity is set with colorful projections on the facade of the town hall, Regensburg announces that such an action is not planned.
