The carnival parades in the cities of Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo in Brazil were postponed until next April due to the covid-19 pandemic, the city councils of those cities reported this Friday in a statement.

The decision was made under the guidance of the municipal health secretaries to "preserve lives and join efforts to promote vaccination throughout the national territory," the statement explained.

The parades of the samba schools -scheduled for the end of February- were part of the traditional celebrations that were still going on, after the authorities announced the cancellation of the street carnival on January 4 due to the pandemic situation.

In their statement, the municipalities said that they will soon release more details about the new schedule of the parade.

In 2021 the carnival was canceled in its entirety due to the pandemic.
