Carla Escobar, 28, and Fredy López, 34, are suspected of the November 4, 2021 murder of German teacher Elke Wolter, public prosecutor spokesman Juan Luis Pantaleón told reporters.
They were arrested during an operation in Ayutla, in the southwest of the country, on the border with Mexico, police said.
Elke Wolter, 60, a teacher at the German College in Guatemala City, was driving with her husband, also of German nationality, when men on motorbikes opened fire.
Guatemala is considered one of the most dangerous countries in Latin America, with approximately 3,500 murders each year, almost half of which are committed by the "maras" (criminal gangs) Barrio 18 and Mara Salvatrucha or in connection with drug traffic.
