The three-million gift: the Kallmann Museum is being remodeled and renovated for the 30th

The municipality of Ismaning is expanding the Kallmann Museum for almost three million euros.

The refurbishment also eliminates some weak points.

– This year the Ismaninger Kallmann Museum is celebrating its 30th anniversary and its reputation as a nationally significant art gallery. The municipality of Ismaning has now given the birthday present with a 2.96 million euro renovation. In addition to various beautifications, the weak points of the building are improved and on top of that there is another exhibition room.

A striking appearance and yet a weak point is the glass facade of the museum in the Ismaninger Schlosspark.

The front causes a lot of heat on the inside, which means that the staff in the checkout area does not have a particularly pleasant job, especially on hot summer days.

An initial plan for 2020 provided for an extendable sunroof, which was visually controversial.

The planning team changed last year and with it came new ideas that made the canopy, which had changed the façade, superfluous.

The new architects suggested replacing the glass façade with special sun protection windows.

Natural sun protection

Part two of room cooling is a solution that the Ismaning climate protection community has committed to.

The currently free forecourt is to be provided with large trees that provide natural sun protection.

The architects' drawings depict a meeting place with chairs and tables in front of the museum.

After 30 years, logical renovations and beautifications are being tackled in the building.

The big change will be the roofing of the inner courtyard, which was actually intended for open-air events and was practically never used.

This resulted in a tour of eight different rooms in the building.

Now the Kallmann Museum is gaining a room in the middle that should also be suitable for events or concerts.

Municipality assumes guaranty

The municipal council was very pleased that the museum, represented by director Rasmus Kleine and former mayor Michael Sedlmair (foundation chairman), tried to implement the project economically. With 299,000 euros, the foundation itself contributes ten percent of the costs as its own funds. After various subsidies for the museum, the municipality of Ismaning is left with a share of 1.62 million euros. In addition, the guarantee for 646,000 euros is assumed. That is 80 percent of the 808,000 euros that the museum's foundation is borrowing.

The municipal council agreed that after 30 years the renovation measures are urgently needed.

"I'm glad we didn't implement the first variant," said Nikolaus Kraus (FWG), who once voted against the construction project because of the canopy.

He noted that it makes sense for architects to get a second opinion.

Mayor Alexander Greulich (SPD) emphasized that the museum, with many guests from the greater Munich area, is a key ambassador for Ismaning: "This museum has long since ceased to be a place where pictures are simply hung on the walls."
