"There will be a strong earthquake in Israel, we need to wake up before it is too late" | Israel today

Against the background of the earthquakes in the north of the country, experts warn of the authorities' lack of preparation in terms of residents and the durability of the buildings. • Expert in natural disasters: "All public buildings must be protected at least"

In the last day, Israel experienced two earthquakes with a magnitude of 3.7 on the Richter scale in the north of the country.

The noise point was yesterday in the Beit She'an area, about 19 kilometers northeast of Beit She'an.

Today, the second quake of the same magnitude occurred according to the Geological Survey of Israel 16 km southeast of Tiberias. Experts who spoke with "Israel Today" explain whether it is possible to learn about a stronger earthquake that will occur soon.

Seismologist Dr. Avi Shapira of the University of Haifa, former chairman of the Steering Committee for Earthquake Preparedness, says that this is a rare phenomenon, but not completely unfamiliar.

"Two consecutive earthquakes in the same place is definitely a surprise and they are relatively rare, although it is not something unknown in the world or in Israel. We have had earthquakes at the same point in the past as happened now. However, it is a rare event and should be examined in depth. "I just have to say that to date there have been no studies on the subject, so it is no more worrying than the constant earthquakes in Israel."

"Israel as a country needs to better prepare for earthquakes. I hope that when the stronger earthquake comes then we will be ready. In any case such noise will come and at the moment at least we know it has damage because there is not enough preparation and protection in the Beit She'an area."

Are two earthquakes in the same place a sign of a louder noise?

"No, this is not a sign and it is impossible to predict when the expected strong earthquake will happen in Israel. In any case, what can be said is that there is a lot of energy in the ground in the ground that it did not release yesterday and therefore there was noise today."

For his part, Prof. Moshe Inbar from the University of Haifa, an expert in natural disasters, explains that "earthquakes that follow with such intensity are not unusual and happen all the time in Israel. Therefore, the fact that there were two earthquakes in the north of 3.7 is not unusual.

"All public buildings must be protected at least because a strong earthquake is expected in the country and this situation is worrying."

Dr. Ephraim Laor, head of the Center for the Study of Sudden Disasters (AFRN) at the Holon Institute of Technology, says that "there are places in the world where there is a series of earthquakes, so-called swarm, leading to greater earthquakes later. "Research needs to be done and complex formulas put in place. But there are places where it has been proven that a series of small noises is the prelude to the big noise. No such research has been done in Israel and in fact we have no information on the nature of earthquake behavior in Israel."

"I must say that yesterday when the quake I and my family practiced going outside to avoid the noise and it's even I live in a place with a very protected building even from strong earthquakes. Unfortunately, no other person came out on my street and it is not good. Like the corona landed on us and like wars "They land on us, it will be like this with an earthquake. And you have to constantly practice and not wait for the moment of truth then no one knew what to do. In Israel there will be an earthquake and you have to wake up now before it is too late," Ephraim explains.
