The 47-year-old police officer was shot to death by a man who apparently used a semi-automatic weapon. "These are not robberies, these are not attacks, these are brutal murders," said a local police officer.

A 47-year-old Texas officer was shot dead early Sunday morning during a traffic stop in the city of Houston, according to local authorities.

The tragic incident occurred at 12:45 am local time when Charles Galloway, who had served 12 years in Harris County Precinct 5, was stopping a vehicle in the 9100 block of Beechnut Street.

A man got out of the car, a white Toyota Avalon, and immediately shot Galloway multiple times and then drove away, according to Houston Police Chief Troy Finner.

The officer died at the scene.

"What we're seeing regularly on the streets of Harris County has got to stop," Trooper Ted Heap told a news conference outside Memorial Hermann at the Texas Medical Center.

“These are not assaults, these are not attacks, these are brutal murders.

This has to stop," the officer said.

The violent episode occurs just days after a young Latino police officer was shot to death in New York as he went to a home due to a domestic dispute, in a case that reignited the debate around violence on the streets in the work of the security forces.

Witnesses told authorities that the attacker, who is still at large, apparently used an assault weapon and was believed to be a young Hispanic man.

"Whoever shot the deputy officer, I hope he turns himself in peacefully," Finner said.

“I am heartbroken,” said Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo, according to local NBC News affiliate KPRC 2.

“All I see is people dedicated to community service, dedicated to sacrifice.

People have to wonder even more what happens when these officers take to the streets and leave their families behind,” he added.

Galloway had a daughter, authorities said.

He had served in the Harris County 5th Precinct since 2009. He had served with the Toll Roads Division until he was promoted to Corporal in 2020. He was also a field training officer, mentoring and handing out new officers, as can be seen in a post about his rise from two years ago.

“Numerous officers here in the precinct were trained by him, he was his mentor, and he will be missed,” Finner said at a news conference.

Galloway had asked to work the night shift so he could continue training officers, he said.

"He meant a lot to their lives," Agent Heap said.

“He was the one sitting in the front seat with them.

He was the one teaching them what to do and how to get to their families safely,” he said.

"I ask every member of this county and community to join us in offering support, blessings, love to the family of this hero and to all of the officers who put their lives at risk to protect the community," Judge Hidalgo said. in a message in Spanish.

"We are not going to stop until we find the suspect who killed the officer," he concluded.
