Ian Alexander Jr., the son of actress and director Regina King, passed away last weekend.
King's son took his own life, according to People magazine.
Last Wednesday was his 26th birthday.
"Our family is most severely broken due to Ian's loss," King told the magazine.
"He is such a bright light, who cared so much about the happiness of others. Our family asks for respectful consideration in these personal times."
Ian was the only son of King and her ex-husband, music producer Ian Alexander Sr.. Like his father, Ian also took a musical path and acted as a DJ. King called him in interviews "an amazing young man" and listed him as her greatest source of pride. When she divorced his father in 2007 after nine years of marriage, the Oscar-winning actress admitted in interviews that single parenting is not an easy task, but nothing is stronger than her white love. "You do not know what unconditional love is," she said at the time. "You may say you know, but you do not know. If you do not have a child, you do not know what it means. When you experience it it is the most satisfying thing in the world."
Last year Ian wrote on Instagram on his mother's 50th birthday: "So proud of you and inspired by your love. Being able to see you win this life and make it yours is something I will forever be grateful for. Accepting you as a mother is the greatest gift I could ask for. All. "The Marvel cinematic universe is unmatched by you. You are the true superhero writer."

King is considered a well-known and popular figure in Hollywood.
She has starred in TV series like "The Guards," "The Natrip" and "Southland," alongside movies like "Enemy of the State," "Jerry Maguire" and others.
In 2019, the actress was chosen as one of the 100 most influential people in the world, according to a list by Time magazine.
Along with the closeness that the two demonstrated in the media and on the Internet, King and her son shared a joint tattoo in which it is written in Aramaic "unconditional love", after they participated together in Kabbalah studies.
Plus a lot of Ian accompany his mother on the red carpet at premieres.
At the "Golden Globe" awards ceremony in 2019, she called her "Super Mom" in an interview with "E!".
"She does not let bad work days sabotage our shared time. It's really awesome to have a mom I enjoy spending time with," he said at the time.
