Coalition tensions: Citizenship law goes to vote this week Israel today

2022-01-23T08:02:59.502Z

The storm over the law is a continuation of the clashes within the coalition, as it was last week, when the draft law fell in the plenum • Shaked said in closed talks that she is determined to pass the Citizenship Law, while her coalition partners oppose it

The political battle within the government over the approval of the amendment to the Citizenship Law is expected to continue this week as well, after it was approved by the Ministerial Committee for Legislation about two and a half weeks ago.

As will be recalled, the purpose of the Family Reunification Law is to prevent the flow of Arab families from Judea and Samaria into the Green Line.

In order to stop the law, under which tens of thousands of Arabs from Judea and Samaria will become citizens of the State of Israel every year, Interior Minister Ayelet Shaked has advanced a new law, which has already been approved by the Ministerial Committee for Legislation.

However, the Meretz faction filed an appeal on the issue to postpone the government debate on the matter that is expected to take place today and to prevent it from being voted on in the plenum later this week - thus trying to thwart the bill.

The storm over the law is a continuation of the clashes within the coalition, as it was last week, when the draft law fell in the plenum on Monday, after MK Jida Rinawi Zoabi of the coalition's Meretz faction voted against it - thus toppling it on first reading.

As will be recalled, the non-passage of the Citizenship Law was one of the first failures of the coalition, shortly after its formation.

Shaked, whose area of responsibility as Minister of the Interior is responsible, has pledged to pass the law again.

At the same time, the High Court ruled that Shaked could not continue the policy of refusing to reunite families on the basis of the previous law that expired, and assumed that this policy would expire at the end of the current month.

At the same time, the Ministerial Committee approved a similar law initiated by MK Simcha Rotman of the opposition (religious Zionism). Exceptionally, right-wing ministers, New Hope and Yisrael Beiteinu supported the same law.

After the government's loss in the Knesset last week after the draft law fell, Shaked said in closed talks that the game was over and that she was determined to pass the Citizenship Law, while her coalition partners opposed it.

She threatened that if RAAM and Meretz torpedoed government law once again, it would cause the coalition to support Rothman's law.

However, its government partners are torpedoing its moves.

Foreign Minister Lapid has appealed the decision of the Ministerial Committee on Legislation to support Rothman's law.

To overcome the appeal the government needs to discuss the law and approve it.

But Lapid controls the government's agenda, and he does not intend to bring up Rothman's law for discussion, who himself has not yet decided when to raise his bill, and this will be done in coordination with all opposition factions.
