The cabinet ministers convened today (Sunday) for a meeting and approved the increase of the Yad Vashem budget by NIS 29 million for 2022, with the aim of expanding the memory of the Holocaust and fighting anti-Semitism and Holocaust denial.

In addition, at the meeting there will be a vote on the establishment of a committee of inquiry into the submarine affair - a decision that will probably be made.

As mentioned, the government approved the proposal of Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, Foreign Minister Yair Lapid and Minister of Social Equality Meirav Cohen, to increase the state's participation in the budget of the Holocaust Martyrs 'and Heroes' Remembrance Authority - "Yad Vashem" - for 2022.

The budget framework will be allocated from the Prime Minister's Office, Foreign Affairs, Security, Finance, Education, Internal Security, Interior, Economy, Welfare, Social Equality, Diaspora, Tourism, Energy, Religions, Intelligence, Culture and Sports, and Jerusalem and Heritage.

The decision is made ahead of the International Holocaust Remembrance Day, which falls on Thursday, as well as marking the 77th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau extermination camp.

"The world has a duty to remember and deal with the meanings of the Holocaust, a tragedy unparalleled in the history of nations, but the main task is on us, the Jewish people and the State of Israel. Therefore, the government will increase the state's participation in Yad Vashem budget," he said. "It is good that the world remembers. I will speak to all the ambassadors in Israel on this issue this week, and we as a government also have a duty to ensure that Yad Vashem continues to preserve the memory of the Holocaust in Israel and around the world."

Foreign Minister Yair Lapid added: "Holocaust remembrance is a moral order for us as a nation, and for me also a private order as the son of a boy from the Budapest ghetto. "Of the six million, and especially a message to survivors, families and the whole world - the State of Israel will not forget and will do everything in its power to preserve the memory."

Minister of Social Equality Meirav Cohen said: "Yad Vashem is an organization of national significance for the State of Israel. It should not be a body that raises money from donors. We have a responsibility as a state to deepen the study and memory of the Holocaust."

Bennett: We are free from foreign considerations

Also, at the beginning of the cabinet meeting, Prime Minister Bennett referred to the vote on the establishment of the commission of inquiry.

"It is important for me to say to all Israeli citizens: The security procurement processes in this government are free from foreign considerations. The only compass of us all is the security of the State of Israel," he said.

He added: "Last week we signed a good time for the purchase of three submarines. This is an extremely important action for the security of the country, decades ahead, after a severe delay of years. In the end, this is what is important - to ensure the continuity of Israel's strategic capabilities." .

According to the yeshiva's agenda, the ministers will also discuss the International Day of Remembrance for the Victims of the Holocaust and the Day of the Struggle against Anti-Semitism;

In addition, ratification of the Memorandum of Understanding between the Government of Israel and the Government of the United Arab Emirates regarding cooperation in the study and utilization of outer space for peaceful purposes will be discussed.

Meanwhile, Minister Handel intends to demand today at the cabinet meeting the establishment of a state commission of inquiry into the lack of governance in the Negev and the Galilee.

He told Israel Today: "The real threat to Israel today is the lack of governance in the Negev, the Galilee and the cities involved. The main failure is how we arrived at a reality where there is autonomy in the country, ignoring governments in the last decade. That we will not reach such events in the future. "

At the same time, the government is expected to approve today a plan to plant 450,000 trees across the country over the next 20 years to tackle climate problems.
