Penzberg - The city of Penzberg is applying for a piece of contemporary history: It's about an old fence in Munich, which is a symbol for the "White Rose".

The farewell photo of the “White Rose” resistance group was taken on July 23, 1942 on Orleansstrasse in Munich, not far from the Ostbahnhof: Hans Scholl is waiting for the train with Alexander Schmorell and Willi Graf in Wehrmacht uniform, in the background Sophie Scholl is leaning against the fence and laughing into the camera.

Now the old fence is to disappear in favor of a residential area.

This causes some media echo.

There is an idea to preserve the historic relic: 100 fence segments are to be distributed to schools, academies and public institutions throughout Germany.

Reason for the Penzberg SPD to become active.

At the most recent city council meeting, the parliamentary group's application was on the table: the city of Penzberg should apply for a section of the fence.

Location at the "Murder Night" memorial

The Social Democrats also had a suggestion for a location: "A worthy place would be to integrate the segment as the entrance door at the memorial to the victims of April 26, 1945," read the application.

Not only because the 16 women and men who were murdered by Nazi henchmen shortly before the end of the war are remembered there - but also because Sophie-Scholl-Straße is nearby, wrote the SPD parliamentary group.

"It is a part of very formative history," City Councilor Regina Bartusch campaigned for support for the fence project.

And: "There would be no costs." Finally, SPD colleague Hardi Lenk agreed to transport the section to Penzberg.

City council is unanimous

There was no major debate in the city council.

Mayor Stefan Korpan (CSU) described the SPD request as a “good thing”.

Ludwig Schmuck (CSU) made it clear that the city and city council were guilty of this, also with regard to the memory of the victims of the "Penzberg Murder Night" in 1945: "You just can't forget that." In the end, the committee decided unanimously that the municipality is officially applying for the purchase of a section of the fence.
