INTERVIEW – The historian publishes a new edition, updated and expanded, of a crucial work, La France qui déclasse. From deindustrialization to the health crisis (Texto), enriched, in particular, with a chapter on the disintegration of the public hospital and the fatigue of our health system.


Pierre Vermeren is a normalien, agrégé and doctor of history.

His book “La France qui déclasse.

From deindustrialization to the health crisis”, had initially appeared in 2019 during the crisis of “yellow vests”.

In this new edition, a third of the text is unpublished.

- What place do you give to public health and the hospital in your long-term reflection on "France which downgrades"?

The hospital crisis is revealed to the general public in 2019, between the "yellow vests" and the Covid-19.

The great strike brought to light the saturation of emergencies and, beyond that, the thrombosis of hospital and city medicine.

France, which downgrades, from industry to school or from agriculture to justice, we knew.

But the confinement of the country for months, for lack of emergency beds, questions a new facet of downgrading: medicine, perhaps even more than school, has become for the French the substance of the republican nation-state .
