A Thai man has been charged with the murder of a Briton who was stabbed to death with a rice sickle in the west of the country, police said on Sunday.

The two men had been drinking alcohol in the early hours of Saturday outside a rented house in Muang district, Kanchanaburi, a three-hour drive from Bangkok, police said.
The 50-year-old Briton, who had lived in the country for five years with his Thai wife, was found lying in a pool of blood.
A sickle used for harvesting rice was found at the crime scene, along with a pair of shoes, local media reported.
Another 54-year-old Briton, a friend of the victim, was seriously injured in the attack, said Western Provinces Police Commander Thanayut Wuthijarasthamrong.

The alleged attacker, a 22-year-old man, had a history of mental illness, according to local media.
He is charged with murder and attempted murder and has already pleaded guilty, police said.
