New Zealand's Prime Minister Jacinda Arden announced today (Sunday) that she has canceled her wedding in light of the new restrictions imposed by the government to curb the spread of the Omicron variant in the country.
Under the new regulations, masking will be required and gatherings will be restricted from midnight. This follows the discovery of nine Omicron cases that showed the spread of the strain from the northern islands of New Zealand to the southern islands by a family returning from marriage. Gatherings in bars and restaurants and at events such as weddings will be limited to one hundred people - but places that do not check vaccination certificates will be limited to only 25 people.
"My wedding will not take place," Arden told reporters. She added that she was sorry for anyone who got into a similar scenario. Arden did not reveal the date of her wedding, but rumor has it it was scheduled to take place soon.
When asked how she felt about canceling her wedding to her longtime partner and host Clark Gaifford, she replied: "This is life."
"I am no different from thousands of other New Zealanders, who have been affected far more destructively by the epidemic, especially the inability to be with their loved ones suffering from a serious illness and a serious illness. It is a much greater sadness than anything I have experienced," she said.
