World Health Organization: Omicron May End Europe's Epidemic | Israel today

2022-01-23T17:57:01.038Z

The organization's executive director for Europe explains that with the end of the current wave long months of silence are expected due to the development of immunity • However, he warns: "This virus has surprised us more than once"

The director general of the World Health Organization in Europe said today (Sunday) that the Omicron variant is taking the corona to a new stage and may bring an end to the epidemic on the continent.

"It is conceivable that the region is nearing the end of the epidemic," Hans Kellogg told AFP.

In an interview, he added that the omicron variant may infect 60 percent of Europeans by March.

He said that with the end of the current wave in Europe, there will be some global immunity for many weeks and months: whether thanks to the Corona vaccine or because of the immunity of infected people.

"Therefore we anticipate that there will be a period of quiet before the corona may return towards the end of the year. But that does not necessarily mean that the plague will return," Kellogg explains.

Studies have shown that the omicron variant leads to less severe infection in vaccinated people than the delta variant.

As a result, hopes have been raised that corona will become a disease that is more like seasonal flu.

Kellogg explains that the corona virus has surprised the medical community in the world more than once and therefore should be very careful.

As of January 18, the Omicron included 15 percent of the World Health Organization's new cases in Europe.

This region includes 53 countries including Central Asian countries.

A week earlier the variant included only 6.3 percent of the new cases.
