After Mali and Guinea, Burkina Faso in turn targeted by a coup

STORY - The mutiny that began on Sunday turned into a putsch when the rebel soldiers arrested the president.

In the game of dominoes that the Sahel has become, the last piece to fall is Burkina Faso.

The president, Roch Marc Christian Kaboré, was arrested at dawn on Monday.

Monday, at the beginning of the evening, the putschist soldiers appeared on television, confirming, according to the consecrated phrase, that the army

"had taken its responsibilities".

In this press release, the junta, dubbed the Patriotic Movement for Safeguarding and Restoration (MPSR), says it has acted in the face of

"the manifest incapacity of power"

and announces, in addition to the arrest of the president, the dissolution of the government and that of the assembly.

Several ministers as well as the head of Parliament, Alassane Bala Sakandé, often seen as the Dauphin, were also arrested and are being held

"in a safe place".

At the head of the MPSR is Lieutenant-Colonel Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba.

This officer, partly trained in France, had commanded the elite Cobra force before being appointed head of the military region of Ouagadougou.
