Ouagadougou-SANA
A Burkina Faso army commander announced the dismissal of President Roques Marc Christian Kabore, the suspension of the constitution, the dismissal of the government, the dissolution of parliament and the closure of the border, while the fate of Kabore remains unknown.
In a statement broadcast on state television today, the commander said that the army is committed to setting a timetable for the return of the constitutional order acceptable to all, accusing Kabore of failing to unite the country in the face of challenges.
There were conflicting reports about Kaboré's fate, as two security sources said that Kabore, the Speaker of Parliament and the ministers were effectively in the hands of the army at the Sangoli Lamizana barracks in Ouagadougou, but a government source confirmed that Kaboré left his residence before the arrival of armed elements who opened fire on the cars of his convoy.
Kabore's account on Twitter posted a tweet in which he said the country is going through difficult times and at this exact moment we must protect our democratic achievements.. I call on those who took up arms to put them at the service of the higher interests of the nation.. We must resolve our contradictions through dialogue and listening.
The African Union, the European Union and the United States condemned the coup and called on the army to strictly adhere to its mission of defending the country's internal and external security and ensuring the safety of the president and members of his government.
For his part, the Popular Movement for Progress Party, to which Kabore belongs, condemned what it called the failed attempt to assassinate the President of the Republic, warning that Burkina Faso was heading hour after hour towards a military coup.
President Kabore has been in power in the country since 2015 and was re-elected in 2020.
