The Russian State Duma has warned that the build-up of US and Western forces in the Baltic and Eastern European countries may cause an escalation of tension in the region, stressing that it will not leave such a threat unanswered.
The New York Times reported yesterday, quoting sources in the US administration, that President Joe Biden is studying the possibility of deploying US forces, aircraft and combat ships in the Baltic states and Eastern Europe.
Andrei Kartapolov, head of the Defense Committee of the Russian State Duma, told reporters, commenting on the newspaper's report, that sending these soldiers will aggravate the situation in the region, and it has now become clear who is interested in escalating the situation and who continues to destabilize this region... it is the United States. For us, this information is a matter of concern and alert.
Kartapolov stressed that Russia will not leave these actions unanswered and will take all appropriate measures to deal with these escalating threats.
Today, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg acknowledged the alliance's intention to put reserve forces on alert and send ships and fighters under the pretext of strengthening its defenses in Eastern Europe.
The alliance referred to the decisions taken by Denmark in recent days to send frigates and warplanes to the Baltic states, Spain's support for its naval deployment, the Netherlands' preparation of ships and land units on alert for the rapid reaction force, and France's intention to send troops to Romania, and that the United States is considering increasing its military presence.
