The state administration is to be climate-neutral by 2030.

Minister Eder presented the starting point for this ambitious goal with the help of a study.

"The numbers show the magnitude of the task."

Mainz - According to a study, the goal of a climate-neutral state administration in Rhineland-Palatinate by 2030 can hardly be achieved. According to the "starting balance" presented by the Munich-based consultancy FutureCamp Climate, the state administration's annual CO2 emissions are around 226,000 tons and can only be reduced to around 137,000 tons without compensation by 2030, but not to zero. Climate protection minister Katrin Eder spoke on Monday in Mainz of a "huge, very ambitious goal", even if the climate protection activities of the past three years are not yet reflected in the balance based on 2018.

"What we didn't do ourselves in 2030 must be compensated for," said the Green politician, citing climate protection projects and the purchase of certificates as examples.

At a price of 65 euros per tonne of CO2, around 9 billion euros would otherwise have to be offset in 2031.

According to the “initial balance sheet”, the biggest sources of CO2 are the heating (51 percent) and electricity supply (32 percent) of the 1,600 properties and the vehicle fleet (12 percent).

Distributed among the departments, the universities are responsible for almost half of the CO2 emissions.

The research-strong University of Mainz is the absolute leader, followed by the Ministry of the Interior with the police and the Ministry of Justice with the prisons.

According to the study, around 90,000 tons of CO2 can be saved by 2030 if the power supply is completely switched to green electricity or if the company generates its own electricity from renewable energies, if the properties are energetically renovated, heating oil is replaced by renewable energies, programmed heating systems with thermometers in all buildings installed and the proportion of renewable energies in the district heating supply is increased.

In addition, conventional service vehicles and work machines would have to be replaced by vehicles with electric or hydrogen drives.

"As the state government, we have to deal with the results together," said Eder.

There are still no electric water cannons or helicopters.” And the prisons cannot be converted on the fly.

The next step is now the potential study by the Ministry of Finance and Building for an energetic renovation of all properties.
