It is better to age at home with the support of a carer or a home nurse than to go to a retirement home: beyond responding to the majority wish of the French, this "domiciliary shift" is widely encouraged by public authorities, because it would cost public finances much less.
This well-established idea, which guides all the policy of aid to autonomy, is however called into question by the Court of Auditors, in a report published Monday.

At first glance, the public cost between home care and placement in an Ehpad would be doubled.
Home support (including care, social support, tax reductions, etc.) costs public finances around 10,700 euros per year, compared to 21,000 euros annually in nursing homes.
But this difference reflects the difference in intensity of care: at home, only 15% of dependent people benefit from real care, provided by a nursing service...
