An ice climbing tour on the north face of the Jochberg almost cost an athlete his life.

He fell over an icy waterfall and his helmet shattered.

Kochel am See

– The Bergwacht Kochel rescued an ice climber from the north face of the Jochberg on Friday afternoon.

The man, around 40 years old and from the Nuremberg area, was traveling alone and had an accident at an icy waterfall, reports the mountain rescue service in a press release.

The ice climbing routes on the Jochberg are considered demanding.

The man was traveling alone and tried to climb up a ditch (in technical jargon it is called a "gully") in the right part of the wall.

In the upper third, however, he fell ten meters down an icy waterfall for unknown reasons.

His helmet shattered and he sustained injuries to his back and shoulder, according to the mountain rescue service.

Extensive alerting

The victim was able to make an emergency call on his own. Due to the severity of the injuries and the challenging terrain, an extensive alert was issued. Ten volunteer mountain rescuers from Kochel got ready. The operations manager also asked for support from the ice climbing group from the Hochland mountain rescue service. A helicopter with an ambulance crew and winch was also requested.

The injured person was conscious and was able to keep in touch with the rescuers so that they could determine his coordinates via mobile phone.

The fastest available helicopter was available in Reutte/Tyrol.

He picked up two ice climbers and flew them into the face.

They secured the scene of the accident with bolts and rope railings.

Then the emergency doctor and another helper were dropped off with the winch.

After the patient had been treated, he was pulled into the helicopter in a recovery bag and flown to the accident clinic in Murnau.

Then the other helpers were brought out of the wall.

"It was lucky that there was flying weather on Friday"

"It was a very good cooperation with the air rescue partners," says Toni Geiger, the Kochler mountain rescue service manager, thanking all the helpers.

"It was lucky that there was flying weather on Friday." A terrestrial rescue of the injured would have been very expensive.

Not only would many emergency services have been needed, but also extensive risk management would have had to be drawn up for the men and women.
