The 35-year-old MP Martin Vincentz wants to become the new party leader of the North Rhine-Westphalian AfD.
Vincentz confirmed this on Monday to the German Press Agency in Düsseldorf.
The incumbent head of the state, Rüdiger Lucassen, had previously announced in a letter to the state association that he would no longer be running as a candidate at the party conference on February 5th and 6th.
Dusseldorf - With Lucassen and other party officials, he "thought about who could be the more suitable face to the outside world," said Vincentz, who is deputy AfD parliamentary group leader in the North Rhine-Westphalia state parliament.
"We came to the conclusion that a generational change might be necessary at this point."

Unlike in the past, there should be no vote in the AfD for the leadership post.
The AfD could "certainly make up a few more meters" in terms of its external impact, said Vincentz.

Vincentz said that Fabian Jacobi, member of the Bundestag, who had also expressed an interest in the state presidency a long time ago, also wanted to support him.
