A patient's family donated blood on the same day and blood products were not used

Ho Wan-xia, Chief Administrative Manager (Patient Safety and Risk Management) of the Hospital Authority, said that the Red Cross Service Centre was notified that two confirmed cases had recently donated blood.

The first case went to the Tsuen Wan Blood Donation Centre at 11-12 am on January 16. The blood was processed into platelets, plasma and red blood cells. The platelets were sent to Eastern Hospital for donation on January 19. The patient will use it, and the hospital has arranged for the patient to be tested and observed; other blood products have not been used.

As for the second case, the patient donated blood at the Sha Tin Blood Donation Centre from 12:42 pm to 1:42 pm on January 20. The blood products were not used and have been recovered.

However, one of the patient's family members went to Sha Tin to donate blood on the blood donation day, and their blood products were also not used.

He Wanxia pointed out that both cases were asymptomatic when they donated blood, and they also passed the blood donation screening. The center has started blood product tracking, and unused blood products will be recycled.

She added that no staff or blood-damaged persons have become close contacts, but two blood donation centers will be arranged with a total of 26 staff for testing, and the center will also contact blood donors.

He Wanxia also suggested that citizens should make an appointment before donating blood to avoid crowds.

In addition, before donating blood, we will know whether the blood donor is subject to forced testing, whether he has travel history, or whether he has been in contact with a confirmed patient.

She continued that the chances of spreading COVID-19 from blood are very low, and if blood donors develop symptoms, they can contact the blood donation center.
