By bank transfer or Paypal: Tübingen Mayor Palmer has been accepting donations since Monday.

His possible expulsion from the party meant that he was not involved in the next mayor election on a green ticket.

Going it alone is expensive.

Tübingen - With a new website, Tübingen's Mayor Boris Palmer (Greens) has been looking for people who will support him financially in a possible election campaign as a non-partisan candidate for the mayoral election in autumn since Monday.

"Unfortunately, because of the expulsion proceedings that are now beginning, I can no longer count on the support of my Bündnis 90/Die Grünen party when the mayoral elections are held again in autumn.

I can only run again if I have the support of the citizenry.

That applies first politically, but also financially,” says the introduction under a photo of the green politician (borispalmer.de).

According to Palmer, candidates supported by parties in Tübingen can use a budget of 100,000 euros for a mayoral election. “I have to raise this sum privately if I want to run as a non-partisan candidate. Every donation helps, whether 10, 50, 100 or 1000 euros. Many small donations are more valuable than large individual amounts, because in the end it's the people that count, not the numbers.” Palmer set up a donation account to which a campaign donation can be transferred. "If I decide not to run, your donation will be refunded in full." If at all, he is running as a non-party candidate, Palmer told the German Press Agency. He completely ruled out a change to another party.

Independent of the homepage, according to him, some personal talks with possible supporters have already taken place, but Palmer did not want to name names.

"If I have the impression that I can win the election and that the conditions for a successful election campaign are in place, I have enough substantive reasons to run, especially the climate protection program." Palmer said that a Green candidate who enjoys party support, with around 100,000 euros goes into the election campaign.

Palmer recently announced that he no longer wanted to run as a Green Party candidate in his city's mayoral election in the fall - because of his possible expulsion from the party.

The 49-year-old has been mayor of the university town since 2007.
