U.S. President Joe Biden is considering deploying thousands of U.S. troops, as well as warships and aircraft, on NATO Allies' territory in the Baltic states and Eastern Europe, the New York Times reported tonight (Sunday).
This is against the background of the growing fear of a Russian invasion of Ukraine, as tensions between the countries intensify day by day.
According to the report, senior Pentagon officials offered Biden several options, under which US military assets would be placed much closer to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Among the options: sending 1,000 to 5,000 troops to Eastern European countries, with the potential to increase the number tenfold if the situation worsens.
Biden is expected to rule on the issue as early as this week, US administration officials told the New York Times.
The Pentagon declined to comment for this report.

Meanwhile, the US State Department issued a warning, urging US citizens not to fly to Russia due to "continuing tensions along the border with Ukraine".
At the same time, the United States approved the voluntary departure of US embassy staff from Ukraine.
